In 1871, photographer William Jackson and painter Thomas Moran formed a legendary creative partnership while exploring the region yet to be named Yellowstone. They collaborated extensively on creating images in photo and paint, documenting the expedition. The photos provided evidence that these features existed and the paintings gave the feeling and vibrancy of the landscape. It was these creative works that were successfully used to lobby congress into making Yellowstone the first National Park.
